2011 Deer Steward Course

The West Central Illinois Branch recently sent Branch President, Chase Burns, to attend a 2011 Level 1 Deer Steward Course in Branson, MO, hosted at The Proving Grounds, by Dr. Grant Woods. Chase enjoyed the weekend, immensely, and found himself renewed towards his position, as an advocate of QDM, and as a representative of the Quality Deer Management Association.

The event speakers were a literal “who’s who” of current Whitetail management and research. They included the QDMA’s own Matt Ross, Kip Adams, Brian Murphy, and Joe Hamilton, along with Dr. Craig Harper, Dr. Karl Miller, Dr. Grant Woods and Brad Morman. Presentations covered many facets of each of the four cornerstones of QDM, including: Hunter Management, Herd Management, Habitat Management, and Herd Monitoring.

Plans are in the works for Chase to present the information, to the Branch, and the public, as a way of sharing the knowledge gained from the seminars, and passing along the information to those who could most benefit from it.

Regarding his experience, Chase stated, “Everything about the course was very well planned, and executed. From the ‘Welcome’ reception, at Bass Pro Shops’ Big Cedar Lodge, to the quality of the presentations, to The Proving Grounds tour; start to finish, it was entertainment-packed education! It was tremendously well done, and I’d strongly encourage others to consider attending a Deer Steward course, in the future.”
